Reading Programmes

Reading

Bruce McLaren Intermediate has various reading programmes to assist our students' learning.  In the Reading Room the emphasis here is placed upon proficiency in the various skills - reading for meaning, reading for information & reading for pleasure.  Included in the programme is a greater emphasis upon using the library as a resource, knowledge & use of reference materials, and the making of notes during research.

For children with reading difficulties

We offer 3 extra programmes.  The students make excellent progress as a result.  These are:

The Four Minute Programme (run by Mrs Shirley Donaldson)

This programme is for those young people who experience a great deal of difficulty with reading.  The tutor concerned works with them daily on an individual basis.  They are helped with decoding and fluency so improving their comprehension and enjoyment of reading.

The Parent Programme (run by Mrs Shirley Donaldson)

This programme is for those children who have some reading skills, but who need extra individual help especially in the area of understanding what they read.

This programme needs parent volunteers to enable us to meet the needs of the students.

Any person/parent/caregiver who feels they would be able to give an hour or more per week of their time to this programme please contact the Reading Room and let Mrs Donaldson know.

Training will be given to any volunteer who would like to participate in the programme.

Our sincere thanks to all present volunteer parents.

The Rainbow Reading Programme (run by Mrs Mandy Beamiss)

This programme is for those children who require reading mileage to hone their comprehension skills and increase enjoyment.

All programmes have received national acclaim for the successes which have been achieved.
