Welcome from the Principal

It is my great pleasure to introduce myself to you as the new Principal of Bruce McLaren Intermediate School, but before I do that I would like to pay tribute to David Crickmer.

David gave outstanding service to this school and its community over a very long time. He has been very helpful to me during the run up to my taking over and in true Crickmer fashion, he has gone the extra mile to make sure that I was well-prepared and the hand-over was smooth. Enjoy your retirement David.

My name is Roy Lilley and I originally came from Belfast, in Northern Ireland. I taught in Belfast for seven years, before moving to England, where I taught for a further seven years. I then emigrated to New Zealand (to escape the bitter cold) in 1988, and was employed at Kelston Boys High School, where I stayed until now, apart from a short break in the 1990’s, when I ran my own business.I have moved up the ladder from teacher, to Head of Department, Year Dean, Head of House, Assistant Principal and now to Principal.

For all the time I was at Kelston Boys, I was regularly involved with students and staff at Bruce McLaren. Through that involvement and through my role at Kelston Boys, I have developed a great respect for the outstanding job that the staff here do, year in and year out.

Throughout the various High Schools in West Auckland,  you can find wonderful young women and men from Bruce McLaren, who have excelled in academic performance, sports, cultural activities and the Arts.I feel very proud and privileged to be appointed as the leader of such a fine school and my goal is to ensure that the high standard of teaching is maintained, the students continue to make real progress (especially in English and Maths) and that the whole West Auckland community will see Bruce McLaren as a school of excellence.

Many, many thanks to all of those who were involved in my welcome Powhiri, especially the Kapahaka group. I was really moved when the whole school sang ‘Danny Boy’.

Thanks again. To all you parents; please support the school, the teachers and your child’s learning. You are in key part of the school/student/home partnership. If you want to drop in and say ‘hello’, or discuss any matters with me, please phone my P.A. Nicki Packer and she will arrange a suitable time.

Roy Lilley - Principal
